Project Overview
UserVoice approached MaxCDN in 2009 wanting to speed up their famous feedback widget while lowering their overall hosting costs. While evaluating solutions, UserVoice determined that they needed a CDN that could easily support a custom SSL certificate as well as integrate easily into their Ruby On Rails build process.
Challenge
After reviewing UserVoice’s original hosting, MaxCDN identified a number of vital concerns that needed to be addressed with the CDN hosting:
- Need to handle hundreds of millions of requests per month
- Allow Rsync publishing of files
- Accommodate a custom SSL certificate
- Price sensitivity in not having a per 1,000 request charge
Solutions
MaxCDN implemented a series of solutions to assist UserVoice in accelerating its widget:
- A Push Zone for Rsync compatibility
- Gzip Compression
- A Custom SSL Certificate (based on a new GoDaddy Cert)
- A custom domain masking their old Amazon S3 Subdomain (cdn.uservoice.com)
Results
Among the initial achievements within months of launching the new optimized UserVoice design widget:
- 50% reduction in cost from Amazon S3
- 100% transparent switch to customers and visitors
- Added 9 Points of Presence of to lower latency and speed up the widget delivery
