Project Overview
Hipertexual approached MaxCDN in 2010 wanting to speed up its blogs. At the time Hipertexual had 6 million unique users/month. Since then, their sites have grown to 11 billion unique requests. MaxCDN content delivery has helped accommodate this dramatic upswing of traffic, while also allowing for greater scalability and saving money on bandwidth costs and server resources.
So, when we started, we had about 6 million unique users/month, and now we have about 11. We’ve been growing a lot and the money saved because of MaxCDN isn’t just on bandwidth costs, it is also on server resources, leaving the static file delivery to the CDN and letting us focus on making our sites faster, which, MaxCDN also helps with since the image is delivered from the closest location available.
Challenge
After reviewing Hipertextual, MaxCDN identified a number of vital concerns that needed to be addressed with the CDN services:
- Less strain on the origin
- Optimize JS and CSS with Gzip
Solutions
MaxCDN implemented a series of solutions to assist Hipertextual in accelerating its blogs:
- Distributed assets to 9 different Points of Presence (PoP) and serve them globally
- Created high max-age Cache-Control headers for static content.
Results
Among the initial achievements within months of launching Hipertexual on MaxCDN:
- Able to take more request to the origin (less 502’s)
- End-Users spent less time waiting for assets to load
