Now Shipping: Pseudo Streaming on Pull Zones (for Better Video)
February 25, 2015 | Eamonn Pascal
Now video streaming is more powerful through MaxCDN pull zones.
Recently we enabled our new mp4 module for all MaxCDN customers. This Nginx module was created in-house by our developers, specifically for the use cases of companies that deliver video.
What This Means for You
Now there’s no need for videos to be fully cached on our servers, giving your users the benefit of instant seeking.
This is possible because instead of requesting and caching the full video file from your origin, we now request and cache small video pieces. This allows users to skip to any part of the video they want and get it extremely fast. If the video piece isn’t cached, our CDN servers simply request that part from the origin and send it to the user.
Essentially, it gives your pull zones VOD zone functionality. Users receive a smoother streaming experience in line with big streaming websites like YouTube, and your origin responds faster to cache misses.
This release signals our shift toward a robust pull mentality that can intelligently distribute video content quickly and efficiently.
Enable It Today
To enable, simply go to your control panel and enable “Pseudo Streaming” in your pull zone settings. After enabling, you and your users will experience the full benefits mentioned above.
