Presented By: Dax Moreno and Kyrsten Lew
In this webinar, we’ll present our new CDN reseller platform, showing you how easy it is to integrate into your existing service offering as a hosting provider or digital agency. For more information about the reseller platform and how to become a MaxCDN reseller, check out our reseller announcement and partner page.
Kyrsten, Webinar Host:
Specifically today we’ll go over why now is the perfect time for hosting and digital agencies to resell CDN services, how MaxCDN’s largest resellers use the reseller platform, how you can as a hosting provider or digital agency can use it, what the new reseller platform looks like, and the financial benefits of reselling MaxCDN.
With that said, I’m Kyrsten Lew, Marketing Associate at MaxCDN. And I’m here today with Dax Moreno who is the VP of Sales at MaxCDN.
So I think before we dive in and explore the new reseller platform, we should briefly go over why we created it. Can you take a few minutes to get people up to speed on where the CDN industry is headed, and why some of the biggest CDN resellers, like WP Engine, are using us, [Dax]?
And for those of you interested in the deeper data and facts we’re using throughout our presentation today, you’ll have clickable source links inside of the presentation that [you can download by filling out the form on this page].
Dax, VP of Sales
Thanks Kyrsten. I’d love to walk everybody through exactly what we’re doing here at MaxCDN, and why the reseller program is something that we’re very proud of.
It’s really important to start by saying, when building this new reseller platform, we wanted something simple but effective. We drew a bit of inspiration from our existing control panel that our non-reseller customers use and absolutely love. And those are customers like The Next Web, Garmin, BuySellAds, and a wide range of customers globally in lots of different countries and lots of different markets. And basically what we did is we set about fashioning it into a tool worthy of resell.
This new platform makes it absolutely simple to manage anything, from just a handful of customers, all the way up to hundreds, if not thousands of them. And as the reseller that’s looking to take care of your customers and end users, this lets you scale your business.
The MaxCDN platform scales seamlessly along with you, as you’re doing so and this ideal of scalability and simplicity is key, especially when more people, like your customers, are going to be requesting CDN services in the future.
As you can see in this slide here [slide 4], in terms of the demand for CDN and it being on the rise, there’s a recent report by Market and Markets that stated the CDN industry had an estimated worth of $4 billion in 2014 alone. It’s estimated to reach $12 billion by 2019. So less than five years. That’s a substantial amount of growth, over $7 billion that’s going to be accounted for.
Obviously, this is tied in closely to some of the other technology developments that are going on in the associated industries with CDN, such as hosting, cloud, software as a service, and others.
Another report by Cisco actually shows that not only the value, but actual CDN traffic, along with those industries, is actually on the rise as well. Cisco, in their estimation, is thinking that about 57% of all global internet traffic will be crossing CDNs by 2018. In 2013, that was only 36%. So again, monumental increases in very short amounts of time, which are really highlighting the fact that CDN is something that is going to be a part of technology and online delivery solutions moving forward.
Now as you’ll see, there are several reasons, lots of components that lead into these types of spikes in growth. There’s the advent of Google rankings, the site speed and conversions, major browsers are now requiring https in order to deliver content through optimized protocol HTTP/2.
The other thing is that more people in general are getting online, and traffic needs to be offloaded from the single origin to CDN. It’s about expanse, it’s about reach, and it’s about connecting content and the things that you’re delivering for your end users and customers in an experience to them as quickly and seamlessly as possible wherever they may be.
One of the other things that I wanted to talk a little bit about as well, is that there are several reasons that notable companies are reselling CDN. As I’ve stated before, the service is already needed, the need is growing.
Main Street business, USA or worldwide, this is becoming a component of how they do business each and every single day. Users want to experience things through myriad number of mediums, whether it be a laptop, tablet, mobile. This is why it’s very important for you to get your content and experience to them the way that you intended it to be.
Also, the longer that you sell, the more CDN clout you’ll acquire. CDN is also an easy sell, given its benefits, and the cost certainly far outweighs the value that it brings to the businesses. And even if you don’t sell as well, there’s really no harm done. The platform that we’re working on, and that we’re introducing today, is wholly complementary. It also can be used as a management tool. We have some customers today that utilize this tool in the means of just keeping internal campaigns and department projects all together, and as a tool for managing their own internal business.
So those are just a few of the reasons. There’s a lot more, why manage hosting providers, web development shops, digital agencies have all been drawn to reselling MaxCDN and CDN in general.
What I want to do now, is talk to you about how they use it and how they make it work..
Right now, there is a lack of recognized CDNs in the market that make reselling content delivery services easy. Many of our top competitors listed in the CDN comparison sheet fall into a camp of too much or not enough. Packaged CDN reselling into a broader partner network is giving you access to all non-CDN services, which can become really overwhelming. At the end of the day, it’s too much, too fast, without enough guidance about how to use it properly and make it a part of your business, so that it really provides the kind of impact that you’re looking for yourself and for your customers.
On the other side, you have not enough. There’s a real lack of transparency, or even just not having a reseller program in general, which makes it a little bit difficult to be able to go and get that type of solution, or bring that particular CDN provider network and make it available to you and your customers.
When we talk about a lack of transparency, we think that’s something very important for us at MaxCDN specifically. We pride ourselves on transparency in providing services, details, and information to our customers and to the industry at large, so that way they can understand CDN.
Consider it us spreading the gospel of CDN and its value. And when customers are looking for these types of services, it’s really important when you visit someone’s website or you read some materials, that you get a real understanding of what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and how they’re doing it. When you don’t provide that kind of transparency, it makes it a little bit difficult, it makes it feel a little too exclusive, and it raises more questions than answers that it provides. Which in this day and age, there’s not a really lot of patience for that anymore.
So Dax, I think we’re ready to take a look at the different types of companies that resell MaxCDN and go over what the new reseller control panel looks like.
Can you walk us through some use cases?
So as Kyrsten said, who is this for? And a lot of you that signed up here are looking at this and saying, I want to learn more about it, or you’re currently reselling. And what we wanted to do was highlight a couple of key components here, or key markets, that make it easier to paint a broader picture for all of you.
This isn’t exclusive, by any means, but these are just some highlighted use case studies. What we wanted to describe to you is hosting providers, digital agencies, but not every company offers CDN the same way. So what I wanted to do is take you guys through a look at how some of the best WordPress hosting companies resell MaxCDN. And specifically in a hosting study that was conducted by Cloud Spectator, MaxCDN took the top three places in the Best Response Time category, and we’re going to highlight them right now.
So when it comes to WordPress hosting services, there are a couple of different things. There’s a baked-in option, and there’s an add-on option. A baked-in component we’ll look at is WPEngine who just actually did a press release where they talked a little bit about providing more CDN services to their customers and end users. Companies like WPEngine offer CDN as part of their managed hosting service. It’s baked in, hence the name. So offering extra value that competitors do not offer right off the bat, they’re basically saying, come to our service, and as a value-add, we’ve already taken the guesswork out of some of the main tools and features that you’re going to need.
Now again, for example, WPEngine offers CDN as a complimentary advance tool in all of their plans, but that’s not necessarily how you have to do it. And a really great segue from the WPEngine and baked into the add-on space, is Flywheel and Pagely.
Both of these providers do a bake-in CDN into their offering, meaning it’s a component that’s available to all of their customers. They built it into their control panel. It’s a very easy service to upgrade. But essentially what it is, is it’s an add-on button for smaller packages as well. So for some of those that are getting the premium or premier offering, you’re going to get CDN included at no cost. Or it’s an upgrade path option that enables these companies to be able to create an additional revenue stream or extra just revenue, period, as they work with customers and create a little bit better value.
It’s also important to know you can add these types of services to any kind of hosting provider, whether it’s SaaS, or even niche hosting markets like Magento, Drupal, or other types of CMS, and commerce markets.
So when it comes to web service providers, we wanted to show you a few things. So we’ve got two here, VPS.net and 100TB.com. And essentially, as you can see, it’s dedicating hosting, cloud servers, security services and much more managed services, on top of traditional hosting medium. And much like the add-on CDN we looked at with WordPress hosting, any hosting or web service provider outside of WordPress can upgrade their service offering with CDN.
Actually, one of our largest resellers, 100TB.com, offers CDN alongside dedicated hosting and cloud services, while VPS.net offers CDN alongside cloud servers and cloud sites. So again, this is a very complementary offer. Depending on whether you’re hardware based, cloud based, it’s still a service that your customers are going to be needing if you’re conducting hosting on any kind of scale.
Specifically, given the trends in the CDN market, it’s likely the prospects you attract with your original services, will also want CDN. So again, if you’re a web development shop, if you’re hosting, if you’re a digital agency, again, one-man, two-man, three-person shop or anything else, your customers are going to be looking for these types of services based on their projects, campaigns, or sites. So it’s really important that either now or in the near future, you start looking for a CDN option to deliver to your customers.
One of the things that MaxCDN is going to allow you to do with our reseller packages is offer a relevant complementary service and expand your suite of available services that you can offer. We help fulfill a demand that your customers are generating inside of the market. We also help solve a problem in terms of helping you create whole solutions that help increase customer retention, stickiness, and additional revenue, obviously, that can be generated by offering additional services like this on top of your core offerings.
Now what we’d like to do is take a look at digital agencies. Very similar to web service providers, digital agencies are now often finding themselves in the position of being a customer’s one-stop shop for all of their online needs. This has many obvious benefits for the agencies and their customers, but chief among them is the agency’s ability to develop a strong portfolio of services, so when that customer comes in the door, they know that from end to end they’re going to be able to handle their online needs in a very clear, concise way.
It’s that delivery of an end-to-end solution for their customers that is paramount in meeting customer expectations and satisfaction. Many of you today listening in obviously have online experiences, work in the online space, and are not immune to that feeling of frustration or dissatisfaction when your site doesn’t load properly, the experience doesn’t come out the right way on the mobile device or in a certain region because of lag or latency. So it’s really important the way things are designed and that they’re executed in the manner in which they were designed to do so. That will lead to more customer satisfaction, and CDN plays a much bigger aspect in contribution to that solution than a lot of people realize.
As discussed earlier, this really means, as a digital agency or an associated kind of service, like a web development shop, tapping into the growing CDN services via MaxCDN, we help fulfill that web speed need. We get the proper geographic reach, and we help you take care of your customers in a way that feels as if you’re taking care of them directly as well.
On top of all of it (not to beat the dead horse), but you’re also able to generate some additional revenue and create that extra value that could have been going somewhere else – either to a competitor, or to another technology company that your customers are looking for in order to fulfill the end-to-end total solution of what they’re trying to implement.
It’s also important to note that nearly every client realizes the value of speed online, and providing that value through a CDN is going to give you an edge. At the end of the day, content delivery networks are a relatively new idea to agencies. And I think reselling CDN services will really help establish you as one step ahead of your competitors. Getting to that end-to-end type of solution, and helping create the kind of value that makes long-term relationships the key to your business.
Now what we want to do is talk a little bit about how our reseller works. And as you guys can see from our control panel, our reseller control panel is very easy to navigate. If you’ve used the MaxCDN control panel before as a non-reseller client, it’s even easier. We’ve boiled it down and a lot of the things are still very similar to it. But essentially, anybody can log in, pick it up, and it’s very cleanly laid out and simple to read and manage and do everything that you need from it. So when you decide to become a reseller, one of our sales architects actually works with you to set you up with your reseller account and help you add new clients. All that’s needed is a few bits of information and you’re going to be ready to roll.
Some of that information is basic account domain information. We also allow you to do some branding work as well. What I mean by branding work is that this is a white label solution. We have a few things that are coming out of our development factory here that are going to be pushed out to our control panel. And essentially you’ll be able to do C-naming so that way, as people log into the control panel, they will see your branded URL rather than the MaxCDN one.
Not only will they see your URL, but they’ll also see your logo, your favicon, and your brand color accents, as well as any company signatures for automated emails sent to your customers. Activation confirmation emails, invoice emails, etc. It’ll all be branded to you, which again, we know is important for the resellers in creating that holistic view of you delivering that end-to-end solution to your customers.
Some of the things you can do is use an SSL certificate in keys. You also have the MaxCDN Speed Team available to help you with any other adjustments and edits as you are starting to grow inside of your reseller base with MaxCDN. Once your account is basically set up, you’ll be able to deliver CDN service as if you have your own CDN infrastructure.
Now what I want to take you through is the CDN Manager. And that’s the name of your reseller control panel. So we’ll click up here, and this brings up the actual CDN Manager itself. And again, right now you see MaxCDN, but as I stated before, once you go through the start-up process, it’ll have all of your own branding information. You’ll have your own logo up there, along with a couple of other accent colors.
If your company has its own non-reseller MaxCDN account, so if you’re also a customer and a reseller of MaxCDN, you’ll see two things in that top left navigation. You’ll see the CDN Manager, which we just clicked on, and you’ll see the Control Panel. The CDN Manager is where you’ll be working from as a reseller. But if you’re still using MaxCDN as a non-reseller for your own business purposes, or for your own side domains or accounts or personal blogs or anything else, you’ll be working from the Control Panel when you want to work on your specific piece of information.
Working from the Control Panel will only affect how MaxCDN interacts with your properties, not your customers’. So if you can imagine that inside of this control panel, there is a very nice bright line dividing that up, that’s essentially what we do. Your services are segregated, from a management perspective, away from the way that you manage your customers.
And what we’ll see though, is in the CDN Usage Overview section, the bandwidth you use for your own business is presented along with your clients. Now that doesn’t mean that that’s always the case. It’s just in the overview perspective. You’ll also have the ability to go in and look individually at each of your clients and pull their own particular CDN usage details as needed. Just from a holistic overview standpoint, we bring all of the account details together for you.
Also it’s important to note that in the top right navigation, you’re able to quickly contact your support team—our Speed Team—access support and API documentation, edit your profile, and a few other things.
What we’ll do right now is walk you through a little bit of what you can see inside of the control panel. Obviously in this summary tab right here, it’s going to give you a listing of a few pieces of information that are important to you as you’re looking at your business. It’s the number of clients that you have loaded into the reseller, how many are in a pending state, that maybe you’re starting to activate or you’re working on there, how many are actually active, how many are suspended, how many zones are actually enabled, the amount of bandwidth that has been transferred, your percentage to cache hits, as well as your percentage to non-cache hits.
Again, this is built so that way you can have a very quick look at what you need to see just in a very nice overview dashboard. And as you dig into each customer perspective, you can get a lot more detail with your reporting, specific just to that client.
One of the other things that I can look at here is the CDN usage overview. As I mentioned before, you can see here, Thursday, 8.85 megabytes. And to give you guys and idea, this is a test account, so you know, we didn’t push terra or petabytes of data here. Just enough so we could do some illustrative results with you. But you can see overall, the total usage of you and your clients, basically your account with MaxCDN, what the usage looks like from this. And again, important to note, you can always go back to the individual client and pull that report individually, and just see their traffic contribution to this larger usage overview.
Down here at the bottom of the page, obviously as I’ve been referencing, you can see the dashboard for the clients. Everything is listed, it gives you a nice clean overview. You can also click on the client icon, in the top right, to view all your current clients, as well as create new ones. And since we just mentioned that, let’s go ahead and add a new customer here to this reseller portal.
What we’ll do is click on Clients. It brings us to just an enlarged version of our clients dashboard. And all we’re going to do basically is create a new account. We’ll assign it into MaxCDN Monthly, that’s the CDN platform account. And what we’ll name this one is MaxCDN Webinar.
So now that we’ve got that figured out, all we need to do is scroll back. And we go to our summary page.
And you’ll see that right there at the bottom, we have a new client ID of 45214 MaxCDN Webinar that has now been created inside of our reseller panel. So again, very easy setting up a client, basic information, address, city, state, password, username, and you’re good to go with an alias, and we’re ready to get set up.
Now let’s go into the MaxCDN Webinar Client.
You’ll see a few details here. You can inspect your client’s account and edit any aspect of this. You can also cancel it. So this really does put you in the driver’s seat as you can see. Account details over there to the left. There’s an easy pencil. Anything with a pencil, you click on that and you’re able to edit the information in and around it, for any of the other settings.
Also if you scroll down, you’ll be able to see some additional information around CNAME, Wildcard, EdgeRules, or other types of Dev Tools or services and products that you can purchase or have your clients purchase through you, and they’ll be visible there as you access them. You can also add notes to your account, as well as any other types of activity that happens from a client perspective.
One of the important things, too, is if you scroll back up you’ll be able to see some additional information such as Zones, Services, Invoices, Emails, Users, and the API. These are all details around where you can help manage your customer’s perspective and edit any of this available information. Again, it really puts you in the driver’s seat and allows you to do everything as if you were your own CDN infrastructure provider.
One of the things that you may be interested in are the management components of a test account. Just so you can get an idea of when you go in and manage an individual customer, you’ll be able to see the network statistics, any of the requests per second in real time, as well as the report summary of what they’ve been pulling. And from the top dashboard you can see Hourly Breakdown, Edge Locations, File Types, Status Codes, Logs, and be able to create any of the reports that you need, so that way you can see at an individual client level. You can provide that information to your customer, or use that for your own types of services. You can suggest other up-sales, or track success efficiencies and other key details like that.
Okay. So now that we’ve covered the reseller platform, I think it’s a good time to get into some of the incentives it offers. At the beginning of the webinar, we talked about how reselling MaxCDN can give you an edge over competitors. But now we’re going to take a look at how it can add an additional stream of revenue to your business.
It’s very simple. We wanted this to be a simple but effective program. And so what we’ve done is we’ve created some pre-negotiated, aggressively discounted rates on our bandwidth services in our EU, US, and APAC regions.
What we’ve also done is created discounting rates that also apply to our add-on products and services. These are additional flex locations that expand the geographic reach globally of MaxCDN for you and your customers. We also do mid-tier caching called Origin Shield, we offer SSL on a wider range of options which are anywhere from dedicated to wildcard to SNI, and other details along those, as well as EdgeRules. And as we introduce any more additional products, services, and features, obviously they are also free to be applied by our resellers and their end users as well.
While the financial model looks a little bit ambiguous in overview, the thing that we really want to do is be able to provide some information here and give you guys an understanding of the value that we’re putting into our reseller program.
If you’re interested in having a little bit more detailed conversation around the types of revenue that you can build, or some of the modelling that you can do – or if you’re just ready to sign up, feel free to send us an email. It’s email@example.com. Or you can visit our partner page on maxcdn.com, and submit your information there at the bottom of that partner page. We’ll get it and get back to you as quickly as possible.
Now if you have any questions, we’re going to go ahead and open it up to that. Please submit it into the chat box and we will address them now.
Do you have a plug-in for billing?
That’s a great question. That’s one of the things that we’ve been working on, as part of our white label, and recognition of the reseller, and trying to make this as easy as possible. We know many of you are already reselling services and you have plug-in functionality. What we were focusing on first and foremost is providing kind of that white label branding experience. And our next step of what we’re going to be working on actually, is going to be plug-in functionality for billing modules that are already out there.
So that is in development as we speak. It’s not currently available, but it will be very very shortly And again, for those of you that are interested and have conversations and want to be added to that list as we add it, or are interested in starting up with the program, just shoot us a note and ping us, or if you have suggestions on what type of billing modules you’d like to see us use as a plug-in, we would very much be interested in that kind of feedback as well. So that way we can get the best that’s available out there for our resellers.
How scalable is the platform, how many clients can it support?
As I mentioned earlier, this really does scale as much as needed. This is built off of our control panel for our customers. And we’ve been very very explicit in the development of our control panel and its underlying architecture to enable it to be able to handle quite a few customers.
As I mentioned, it’s great for a handful, and it handles and scales up to hundreds if not thousands of customers. So there’s a lot of data, a lot of clients, and a lot of information and zones and other things that you can grow with this, and it’ll just keep stripping the data back out and asking you to add some more.
Our next question is, how much is the reseller rate?
That’s a very good question. So the reseller rate itself, it varies in discount in terms that everything is tiered. So the more bandwidth and the more customers that you bring to MaxCDN, the greater and deeper your discount goes into the next tiers.
We’re happy to share that information, if you’re willing to submit some information to us and let us know that you’re interested. But to give you an idea, the discounting rate starts roughly around 10% off of our list price, and it starts escalating very healthily from there in order to be a very nice incentive for the type of programming to create some of the margin space that you need as a reseller to operate and compete in the CDN space.
I think that’s it for our questions for today.
If you have any questions or would like to reach out to us regarding the reseller program, email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get back to you. You may also find more information via maxcdn.com.
On behalf of everyone at MaxCDN, thanks for joining us today, and look out for our next webinar.
